My professional career in the third sector began in 1990, when I was part of the launch team for Professional Fundraising. I moved on become editor of the bi-monthly magazine and developed the successful Professional Fundraising show and awards in the early 1990s.
From there, I moved to the British Red Cross, and then on to Leonard Chesire Disability, heading up creative and marketing teams delivering a range of successful and impactful programmes. These included the emergency appeal for survivors of the Turkish earthquake in 1999, the Mind the Gap accessible rail transport campaign, and the Creature Discomforts awareness adverts produced with Aardman Animation.
In 2009 I took the role of Chief Executive at Compaid, a charity for disabled and older people in Kent. Over 15 years I grew the organisation to reach more than 2,000 service users a year, with an annual turnover of £1.5 million.
Alongside my professional career, I have held a number of Trustee and other positions for organisations including the Institute of Fundraising, the Small Charities Coalition, and Build Africa where I was Chair for two years. I have also served as a primary school governor and as a Board director for a Housing Association.
I am now on the Board of two infrastructure organisations, Stronger Kent Communities, and Charity Mentors Kent and Medway, where I serve as Vice Chair. I am also an Ambassador for the business volunteering charity Pilotlight.
In the 2024 New Year Honours, I was awarded the Medal of the British Empire (BEM) for services to charities.
